Things Get Painted - The Cliff Dragon

Image
You've already seen this guy, but I figured I'd do another post to show the base, and the finished model. I did a really basic base with odd tufts of grass, and then... Resin time! Yep, I'm trying water effects again. This time I messed around with some colouring options (I'll go into that at a later date), and made enough mistakes to learn what to do on a future comp entry. I put some extra 50my round bases under the normal base. They were glued in, but just served to raise the main base from the table. That way, when I put the tape edging on it, there was more structure for the tape to help form an edge for the pour. After leaving it for two days to set, I removed the tape. The base had a strange white buildup, but I'm not sure if that was tape residue or something else. Either way, it was able to be sanded back with the resin, the edge of which was then given a gloss coat. Finally, I used some Vallejo water effect gel on the top of the water. I may revisit this ...

Thing Get Painted - Wereape and Cliff Dragon

Image
Another round of quick updates. Here are some wip shots of the Wereape from Bones 3. I wanted a quick base, and one that was green and saturated to contrast the ape itself. A few tufts help break it up from just being static grass. It's not perfect, but it's done and table ready, so I'm happy. It was really fun to paint as well, so I'd definitely consider painting more in the future. This is a Grenadier Cliff Dragon I got for $2 at a bring and buy years ago. For the last few months it has been sitting half done on my desk. I figured that it's better finished to a tabletop quality than sitting there hoping I get a chance to paint it. My main inspiration was the old yellow and green orc wyvern from 90s Warhammer. I ended up going with a pale green for the chest though to make it a bit different. I also made some tall tufts of grass for the base before the final stage. The bingo challenge I mentioned a while ago mentions a base more elaborate than you'd usually us...

Things Get Painted - Deathsleet

Image
Just a couple of quick photos of Deathsleet from the Reaper Bones range. It was fun to paint, however I'm not too fussed about taking proper photos at the moment. I spent a bit longer on the base than I originally planned. I put a few fake jewels on the base, keeping with the colour scheme, and then covered most of the base in snow. This was done in two stages, first with white texture paste mixed with Reaper Pearl White, and then with gloss medium mixed with GW snow powder for the melting snow. I was considering doing some powdered glass for snow effects as well, however after handing it to people, including small kids, at Gammacon in Canberra all weekend, I'm glad I didn't. Anyway, it's been a fun project, and gave me the chance to try out some snow effects I hadn't tried before. Honestly, I'm more likely to use the gloss and snow powder than the texture paste in the future, as I like the effect more.

WIP Wednesday - Deathsleet

Image
A few Wip pictures of a Reaper Bones dragon I'm working on. It's a bit more experimenting with the airbrush and masking methods. It hasn't turned out exactly as I wanted, but at the end I'm aiming for a finished tabletop piece with a few interesting details. Right now, I just have to finish the base.

Things Get Painted - Dragon Hatchling

Image
Quick pictures of the Reaper Bones Dragon Hatching I finished last night. Tabletop quality, so I haven't fussed doing fancy photos. I have a few more of these to paint, and I'm going to try a few different things with them in the future. Lots of fun for a quick job, and now I have a new tiny friend :D. Painted using Reaper MSP, Secret Weapon Washes, and Broken Toad brushes.

Things Get Built - Let the backlog begin!

Image
So, as part of my lead up to shoulder surgery, I spent some time prepping models to paint when I was better, as well as generally helping to get through some of the backlog of minis I have lying around ready to be used for stuff.  First up were some Haqqislam models from Infinity. I have had these sitting around a long time, as they were in the same demo kit I got my hands on a while ago where my Yu Jing models are from. While it's not the basing style I had originally planned for them, I still like how they turned out. They are a nice change to the Yu Jing models. These ones are a bit chunkier, but still have some nice lines to them. My experience with the Yu Jing models was that while Infinity models seem intimidating at first, they are no more difficult to paint than other models, and lend themselves to to some simple yet effective colour schemes with room to have fun.  Progress left until painting: I have to fill a few small gaps on some models, and they are rea...

Things Get Painted - Dragons and Dirigibles

Image
I'll make this quick... Oh, dragons! Oh, dirigibles!  These are models from the Dreadfleet set that GW released a few years ago. Each set comes with one of each... Yeah, I bought two copies of Dreadfleet... But the second time was mainly for the ocean mat to use for Dystopian Wars, I swear! These are actually pretty fun to paint. The dirigibles are painted with dry rush and wash metallics, and the green and gold from my usual Dwarf army scheme. The dragons were painted with washes and dry rushes on the bodies, but layering on the wings and claws, which take up more room than the bodies at the end of the day. The ocean was painted to match my Dystopian Wars ships, which will also, eventually, match my Dreadfleet ships. So why did I paint them? Well, I wanted a quick project. These are fun, and apart from forgetting some paints, done in an afternoon painting meet up. The White Dragon and a Dirigible did briefly make their way onto a DnD table a few weeks ago ...
